Understand the connection

DAOA, also called G72, is discussed in relation to D-amino acid oxidase, D-serine, and NMDA receptor signaling in the brain. It is different from AOC1, the gene involved in digestive histamine breakdown.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses rs2391191, also described as Arg30Lys, alongside glutamate signaling and research on mood and cognition. D-serine helps NMDA receptors respond; the pathway is more complex than a single “high” or “low” neurotransmitter label.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how strong the evidence is for the exact variant and whether symptoms need an independent mental-health or neurological evaluation. A common DAOA variant does not diagnose schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or another condition.
