Understand the connection

HFE helps regulate iron absorption. H63D, identified as rs1799945, is different from C282Y and from many other HFE variants.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser distinguishes a genetic susceptibility from measured iron overload. He discusses ferritin, transferrin saturation, liver health, and the greater significance of some combinations of variants. H63D often has a milder effect than classic higher-risk patterns, and many carriers do not develop clinically important iron overload.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether ferritin and transferrin saturation show excess iron, and whether inflammation or liver disease could affect the results. If iron overload is confirmed, discuss monitoring and treatments such as therapeutic phlebotomy with your clinician.
