Understand the connection

NELL-1 is an antigen associated with a subset of membranous nephropathy, a condition affecting the kidney’s filtering barrier. Protein leakage into urine is an important finding.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses immune complexes, podocytes, proteinuria, and possible associations with medicines, exposures, and other conditions. NELL-1 is different from concluding that IL-8 or another cytokine caused the kidney disease.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how biopsy and other findings identify the subtype, which potential associations need review, and how kidney function and urine protein will be followed. A nephrology team should guide treatment.
