Understand the connection

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid obtained from food. The body can convert it to tyrosine, which helps provide building blocks for catecholamines and other important compounds.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects protein intake and absorption with dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine synthesis. Severe deficiency is unusual and needs evaluation for broad malnutrition, malabsorption, or overly restrictive medical diets. Phenylketonuria, or PKU, is a different situation that requires specific dietary management.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether the result represents a true deficiency, how it fits with the rest of the amino acid profile, and whether a dietitian can help. Do not add phenylalanine without checking the diagnosis and medication context.
