Understand the connection

Proctitis means inflammation of the rectal lining. Inflammatory bowel disease, infection, radiation, and other causes can produce different patterns.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6, and T-cell pathways with local tissue inflammation. He emphasizes that inflammatory signaling differs with the underlying condition, which is why symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether examination, endoscopy, or infection testing is appropriate. The care plan should address the confirmed cause rather than an isolated cytokine or genetic finding.
