Understand the connection

Levothyroxine replaces thyroid hormone, and consistency in how it is taken can affect thyroid test results. Product formulation, storage, and absorption are relevant questions.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses historical manufacturing and potency issues alongside thyroid medicine quality. A historical recall does not establish that your current medicine is affected. Food, calcium, iron, other medicines, and a change in product can also influence absorption and the interpretation of TSH and free T4.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether a product change or interaction calls for repeat thyroid testing and whether any current recall applies to the exact product and lot. Review dose changes with your prescriber instead of changing or stopping thyroid medicine on your own.
