Understand the connection

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external sound source. Hearing changes, noise exposure, medicines, and other factors can contribute.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses IL6 rs1800795 and research on auditory inflammation and noise-related injury. The exact allele matters in genetic research, but a common variant does not determine whether you will have tinnitus or how it should be treated.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask about a hearing assessment and any recent noise or medicine exposure. Sudden hearing loss or new one-sided or pulsating symptoms needs a clinical assessment rather than interpretation from a cytokine variant.
