Understand the connection

TNF-alpha is an immune messenger involved in defense, inflammation, and cell signaling. Its effects include interactions with immune cells and the cells that line tissues and blood vessels.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects TNF-alpha with joint, skin, and bowel inflammation, as well as oxidative stress. He discusses targeted TNF medicines and the separate role of antioxidant enzymes. A TNF genetic variant does not establish the amount of TNF-alpha currently circulating.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which result is being discussed: a genetic variant, a measured protein level, or a diagnosed condition. How does it fit with your symptoms and other tests? Dr. Purser discusses antioxidant support alongside these pathways; ask how any supplement would fit with your medicines and care plan.
