Understand the connection

TNF rs1800629 is a promoter-region variant, commonly described as -308 G>A. A promoter helps regulate gene activity, but a genotype is not the same as a measured cytokine concentration.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses TNF-alpha regulation and the distinction between genetic susceptibility, inflammatory symptoms, and diagnosed disease. He also discusses etanercept, sold as Enbrel, as a TNF-directed medicine and the separate roles of antioxidant enzymes.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask whether the interpretation uses the exact allele, clinical context, and measured findings. A common TNF variant alone does not establish a need for a biologic medicine or predict a specific disease.
