Understand the connection

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon. Diagnosis and disease activity require a combination of symptoms, examination, and testing.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser explains TNF-alpha, IL-12, IL-23, Th1/Th17 responses, and oxidative stress in the intestinal lining. He discusses the difference between targeting a specific inflammatory pathway and addressing nutrient status or antioxidant defenses.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how inflammation is being measured, which treatment target fits the condition, and whether bleeding or absorption problems have caused nutrient deficiencies. Supplements should be reviewed alongside the established bowel-disease plan.
