Understand the connection

Dr. Purser explores IL-23 and Th17 signaling in fatty liver disease and inflammatory liver conditions. Older terms NAFLD and NASH appear alongside the newer terms MASLD and MASH.

Follow the pathway

This teaching follows IL-23 receptor signaling into IL-17 activity, liver inflammation, and the cells involved in fibrosis. Glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase are discussed as antioxidant defenses, alongside the need to assess metabolic and other causes of liver injury.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which result is being discussed: a genetic variant, a measured protein level, or a diagnosed condition. How does it fit with your symptoms and other tests? Dr. Purser discusses antioxidant support alongside these pathways; ask how any supplement would fit with your medicines and care plan.
