Understand the connection

SLC19A1 encodes the reduced folate carrier, which helps transport folate into cells. Transport is a different step from the enzymes that change folate into other forms.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects folate transport with cellular nutrient availability, methylation, and homocysteine. This helps explain why a blood folate value and a question about intracellular folate are related but do not describe exactly the same thing.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how the genetic finding fits with folate status, B12, blood counts, homocysteine, medicines, and absorption. Discuss the form and amount of folate with your clinician instead of selecting a dose from a genetic label.
