THE TEACHING CONNECTION

Different folate forms, different questions

Different folate forms, different questions

Dr. Purser’s course distinguishes methylfolate, folinic acid and methyl-free approaches. It asks what the person already takes, including prenatals and B complexes, because the total exposure can be missed when products are reviewed one bottle at a time.

Putting the pieces together

MTHFR, SLC19A1, SHMT1 and MTHFD1 take part in different steps involving folate, while B12 helps process homocysteine. If a new product leaves you feeling wired or disrupts sleep, record its form, amount and timing, then discuss what happened rather than increasing it automatically.

Where the VARS Triad and MTHFR Daily fit

If you are exploring homocysteine or cytokines, Dr. Purser may discuss MTHFR Daily and the VARS Triad: VARS Glutathione, VARS SOD, and VARS Catalase. He gives glutathione a central place in his approach to antioxidant support.

A gene result alone cannot tell you that you need these products or that they will treat a condition. Review your current results, medicines, goals, and tolerance with your clinician before choosing a product or dose.

How supplementation is approached

Dr. Purser distinguishes methylfolate, folinic acid and other folate strategies according to the clinical picture and tolerance. MTHFR Daily and Hydroxy B12 + Folinic Acid are product options to discuss in that context, with B12 reviewed alongside folate. A methylation label does not replace evaluation of deficiency.

Food sources

Leafy greens; lentils; chickpeas; asparagus; citrus; fortified grains.

Supplement forms

Folic acid, folinic acid and 5-MTHF (methylfolate) are different forms. A common MTHFR variant alone does not establish a need for a particular supplement.

A question to bring to your visit

Which folate forms are already in my products, and how do my B12 and homocysteine results affect the discussion?

What to track and reassess

Record the actual form, other folate-containing products, homocysteine findings when relevant and any activation or sleep changes. Pregnancy-related folic-acid guidance should be coordinated with prenatal care.

From starting support to follow-up

If you and your clinician start a CMA replenishment plan, you may add one new product at a time, often waiting 3–7 days to see how you feel. A check-in is usually planned near ten weeks during an approximately 100-day period. Follow your written plan for amounts and timing. At follow-up, you may continue, change, or stop each item. This timetable does not automatically end longer-term support.
