Understand the connection

Homocysteine and uric acid are different compounds measured for different reasons. Folate transport and one-carbon metabolism are relevant to homocysteine handling.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser discusses SLC19A1, folate availability, methylation, and metabolic stress alongside gout. Urate crystals can activate the NLRP3–IL-1 beta pathway; homocysteine is a separate consideration that should not be confused with the crystal that triggers a gout attack.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask how kidney function, uric acid, homocysteine, diet, and medicines contribute to your results. A gene finding does not replace confirmation of gout or assessment of its other causes.
