Understand the connection

Folate, or vitamin B9, supports DNA building blocks, cell division, and the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. A severe deficiency can affect blood-cell production and other body systems.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser connects folate with SLC19A1 transport, MTHFR and MTHFD1 metabolism, B12, and homocysteine. He discusses anemia, fatigue, mouth changes, and neurological or mood concerns while distinguishing nutrient deficiency from a genetic susceptibility.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which test supports the deficiency and whether B12, blood counts, diet, absorption, and medicines also need review. The form and amount of folate should be chosen with this wider picture in mind.
