Lab solutions: understanding the test names

Learn what common blood, urine, and hormone tests are used to investigate.

Educational summary

Why this matters

Learn what common blood, urine, and hormone tests are used to investigate.

How the pieces connect

A blood count, chemistry panel, urine test, and hormone panel answer different questions. Ask why each test is recommended.

Panels are collections of different measurements

Dr. Purser places basic tests and hormone tests together. A CBC concerns blood cells; a metabolic panel includes measurements related to chemistry and organ function; a urinalysis examines urine. Thyroid and reproductive-hormone tests answer different questions again. A larger panel is not automatically more informative. The useful first step is to know why each measurement is being requested and what an unexpected result would lead to next.

Keep in mind

Follow the preparation instructions given by your ordering clinician and laboratory. Never stop a medicine because of an old test guide.
