Understand the connection

IL23A encodes the p19 subunit of IL-23. Together with the p40 subunit from IL12B, it forms the IL-23 cytokine. IL23R encodes its receptor.

Follow the pathway

Dr. Purser uses this distinction to explain the messenger, its component parts, and the receiver on a cell. IL-23 helps sustain Th17 activity, making it relevant to discussions of psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and some inflammatory joint conditions.

Bring these questions to your visit

Ask which result is being discussed: a genetic variant, a measured protein level, or a diagnosed condition. How does it fit with your symptoms and other tests? Dr. Purser discusses antioxidant support alongside these pathways; ask how any supplement would fit with your medicines and care plan.
